As a solo lawyer based out of Toronto, Canada, Jonathan Roth enjoys running his own shop. He’s been doing it since 2019 and has an office downtown, not far from Queen’s Park and the Legislative Assembly. His firm specializes in business and regulatory disputes, and he has served as counsel to corporations, government entities, and charitable foundations.

Jonathan is a practical person who realizes that he can go it alone if he collaborates with others, bringing in co-counsel when the case demands it and benefiting from teamwork with colleagues who have specializations different from his own. He is well-versed in public law, for example, but taps other attorneys as collaborators on matters involving family law.

But it’s safe to say that, as the principal of a solo law firm, Jonathan wears many hats. From billing to business development to going to court—it’s all down to him. 

And so, in his pragmatic way, Jonathan has always sought to take full advantage of the technological tools that can help him do his job efficiently and effectively.

Jonathan used to use multiple software solutions to run his firm, Roth Advocacy, but it was still challenging to balance the administrative load with the all-important client work, which is the part he found most fulfilling and exciting.

The challenge was to find software that could do it all, one that provided a legal-specific accounting solution on top of practice management features.

This was especially tricky because Canada’s trust accounting and compliance regulations differ from those of the United States, which meant many of the accounting options available wouldn’t meet the needs of Jonathan’s Ontario-based firm.
